searchingforandthatyouareunawareofwhatyouhavelost,butIseethehungerinyoureyes.It

thephysiciancame,tookholdofNanak’swristandstartedtotakehispulse.Nanakbegantolaugh.
”Thereisnoillnessthere,”hesaid.”Youwilldiscovernothingbytakingmypulse.Theillnessisof
theheart.”ThedoctorhadnoideawhatNanakwastalkingabout.Doctorshavetheirownworlds
andtheydiagnoseillnessesbytakingone’spulse.Nanakneededamaster,aspiritualphysician,
andnotamedicaldoctor.
Themasterisalsoaphysician,notofthebodybutoftheheart.Andthemaster’sfirsttaskisto
makeitcleartoyouwhatitisyouareseeking.Thenthesearchbecomesveryeasy.Whenthe
diagnosisiscorrectitisnottoodifficulttofindthepropermedicine.Diagnosisishalfthecure.Butif
thediagnosisisincorrect,thenevenvastquantitiesofmedicinewillbeofnousetoyou.
Whatgenerallyhappensisthatyoubecomeenamoredofwords.Youbegintothink,”Ahyes,thisis
whatIhavelost.ItisGodIhavelost.ItisfreedomIhavelost.”Thenyousetoutonyoursearch.
Anditiswrongfromtheverybeginning.
AsItalktoyou,IlookintoyourheartsandIseethatthethronewithinyouisunoccupied.Thethrone
isthere,andsomeonemusthavesatonitatonetimeoranother,butatpresentheisaway,heis
wanderingsomewhereelse.Yourheartisthatthrone;theking,loveitself,hasleftitbehindandhas
goneroaminginsomefaroffplace.
Thesearchforloveispossible;everychildisbornwithlove.Beforeyoucansearchforsomething
youhavetoloseit,andalthougheverychildisbornwithloveitgetslostalongtheway,somewhere
inthecourseofhisupbringing.Education,societyandcultureplayimportantrolesinthisprocess.
Andbecauseofthislostloveasortofvacuum,asortofvacancy,asortofemptinessiscreated
withinyou.Youareinsearchofthatlove–notofGod.YouhavenevermetGod.Butifyouregain
lovethenyouarestandingatHisdoor.YouhaveneverknownGod.Heisunknowntoyou;you
cannotsearchforHim.Tosearchforsomeone,theremustbesomekindofrelationship,somekind
ofacquaintance.AndyouhavenosuchfamiliaritywithGod.
Truthsurroundsyou.Howwillyoufindit?Truthistherealready;thebasicproblemisthatyouhave
novision.Thesunisalwaysshiningbutyouareblind.Whatshouldablindmanseek?Thesunor
sight?ifyouhavenosight,evenifthesunissittingnexttoyouwhatwillyoudo?Youwillnotbe
abletoseeit;youwillremainindarkness.Sightisneeded.Thatsightislove.Godisever-present.
Heisallaroundyou.Butyouhavelostyourvision;youhavelostthemeansofexperiencingHim.
Loveistheabilitytoexperience.Loveissensitivity.Loveistheexperienceinwhichallyourimpurities
arewashedawayandyouthrowopenallyourdoors,allyourgates.Thenwhosoeverstandsatyour
doorisnolongeranenemyorafriendbutabeloved,andyouopenyourdoortohim.Whenyou
begintofeelthewholeworldisyours,whenyoubegintoseethebelovedinwhosoevercomes
toyourdoor,whenyounolongerseestrangersorenemies,whenyoubegintoseeonlyfriends
everywhere–whenthisphenomenontakesplaceinyou,knowthatyouhavefoundlove.Andforthe
manwhohasfoundlovewhatelseremainstobefound?Themanwhohasfoundlovehasfound
thekeytothedoorofGod.

Understandthesignificanceoflovecarefully.Nothingisgreaterthanlove,notevenGod.God
isachievedthroughlove,butloveisnotachievedthroughGod.ThepresenceofGoddoesnot
guaranteelove,butthepresenceoflovewillsurelybringhimtoyou.AsJesushassaid,”Loveis
God.”
Thebasicquestion,thefundamentalproblem,isseekinglove.Soletusclarifyattheoutsethow
lovehasbeenlost,becausethewaytoregainitwillonlybeclearwhenweknowandunderstand
howithasbeenlostinthefirstplace.
Theroadyoutaketofindloveisthesameroadonwhichyoulostit.Butyouhavetoreverseyour
direction.Youwillhavetoturnaroundandwalktheoppositeway.Thesameladderleadstoheaven
ortohell.Oneendisinhellandtheotherisinheaven.
Youbegintoloseloveasyoubecomemoreandmoreattachedtomaterialthings.Thisishell;thisis
theendoftheladderthatisgroundedinmaterialthings.Butaslovegrows,Godbecomesmanifest.
Andthisistheotherendoftheladder.Thisiswheretheotherendisfixed.Loveisaladder,apath.
Ifyouabandonloveyoubeginadownwardjourney;asyouembraceityoubeginanupwardpath.
Ifyouaskme,IwilltellyoutoforgetGod,toforgettruth.Iwilltellyoutoseekonlylove.Alltherest
willfollow.Justasyourshadowfollowsyou,Godfollowslove.Butnomatterhowhardyouseek,you
willachievenothingwithoutlove.Thisisbecausetheseekerisdullandinsensitive.Hehasneither
thecapacitynorthefitnessforthesearch.Heisasleep,unconscious.Heisfullofhatred,anger
andhostility;heissubmergedinthepoisonofmalice.Andonlythenectaroflovebringsforthjoy.
Everychildisbeautiful,lovely.Andthisisbecauseheisbornwithlove.Butthen,byandby,a
disordersomehowoccurswithinhim.Everychildissolovely;everychildissobeautiful.Haveyou
everseenanuglychild?
Thebeautyofachildhasnothingtodowithhisphysicalbody,itcomesfromsomeinnerstrength.
Withinhim,hislampofloveburnsbrightlyanditsraysemanatefromeveryporeofhisbody,
spreadingtheirlusterallaround.Whereverhelooks,helookswithlove.Butashegrowshebegins
tolosethislove.Andwehelpinthatprocess.
Wedonotteachhimhowtolove,weteachhimhowtoguardhimselfagainstit,howtobewaryof
it.Wetellhimthatloveisveryrisky,verydangerous.Weteachhimtobesuspicious,tobefullof
doubt.Wetellhimitisnecessarytobelikethis,thatpeoplewilltakeadvantageofhimotherwise.
Wetellhimthereismuchcheating,dishonestyandtreacheryintheworld,thatitiseverywhere,and
thatunlessheisonguardpeoplewillrobandcheathim.Wetellhimtherearethieveseverywhere.
WearetotallyunawareofthefactthatGodiseverywhere,yetweneverforgetthatrobbersabound!
Andsowetrainchildrentobeontheirguardagainstthieves.
Ifyouwanttopreparechildreninthisway,thenyoucannotteachthemlove–becauseloveis
dangerous.Lovemeanstrust;lovemeansfaith;lovemeansaccepting–andbeingsuspiciousis
keepingalook-outsonoonecanstealfromyou;itisbeingonguard,remainingconstantlyalert,
asiftherecouldbeanattackatanymomentfromanyquarter.So,beforeanyattackcomes,you
yourselfbecometheaggressor.Youseethisasthebestwayofprotectingyourself.Wetrainour
childrentobelikesentries.Andthisishowwedoit.
