WHATISLOVE?
Tofeelitiseasy,todefineloveisdifficultindeed.Ifyouaskafishwhattheseaislike,thefishwill

sea”–thentheproblembecomesverydifficultindeed.

havefalsifiedlove;theyhaveblockedalllove’sstreams.Inthiscasethereisnobasicdifference
betweenEastandWest,betweenIndiaandAmerica.

Thestreamoflovehasnotyetsurfacedinman.Andweattributethistomanhimself.Wesayitis
becausemanisspoiledthatlovehasnotevolved,thatthereisnocurrentofloveinourlives.We
blameitonthemind;wesaythemindispoisonous.Themindisnotpoison.Thosewhodegradethe
mindhavepoisonedlove;theyhavenotallowedthegrowthoflove.Nothinginthisworldispoison.
NothingisbadinGod’swholecreation;everythingisnectar.Itismanalonewhohastransformed
thisfullcupofnectarintopoison.Andthemajorculpritsaretheso-calledteachers,theso-called
holymenandsaints,thepoliticians.
Reflectuponthisindetail.Ifthissicknessisnotunderstoodimmediately,ifitisnotstraightenedout
rightaway,thereisnopossibility–noworinthefuture–ofloveinman’slife.
Theironicalthingisthatwehaveblindlyacceptedthereasonsforthisfromtheverysamesources
thataretoblameforlove’snotdawningonthehumanhorizoninthefirstplace. Ifmisleading
principlesarerepeatedandreiterateddownthecenturieswefailtoseethebasicfallaciesbehindthe
originalprinciples.Andthenchaosiscreated,becausemanisintrinsicallyincapableofbecoming
whattheseunnaturalrulessayheshouldbecome.Wesimplyacceptthatmaniswrong.
Inancienttimes,Ihaveheard,ahawkerofhand-fansusedtopassbythepalaceofthekingevery
day.Heusedtobragabouttheuniqueandwonderfulfanshesold.Noone,heclaimed,hadever
seensuchfansbefore.
Thekinghadacollectionofallsortsoffansfromeverycorneroftheworldandsohewascurious.
Heleanedoverhisbalconyonedaytohavealookatthissellerofuniqueandwonderfulfans.To
himthefanslookedordinary,hardlyworthapenny,buthecalledthemanupstairsanyway.Theking
asked,”Whatistheuniquenessofthosefans?Andwhatistheirprice?”

thousandyears,arebasedonfalsevalues.Andiflovehasn’tevolvedinthelasttenthousandyears,
takeitfrommethereisnofuturepossibility,basedonthiscultureandreligion,ofeverseeingaloving
man.Somethingwhichcouldnotbeachievedinthelasttenthousandyearscannotbeattainedin
thenexttenthousandyears.Today’smanwillbethesametomorrow.Althoughtheouterwrappings
ofetiquette,civilizationandtechnologychangefromtimetotime,manisthesameandwillbethe
sameforever.
Wearenotpreparedtoreviewourcultureandreligion,yetwesingtheirpraisesatthetopofour
lungs,andkissthefeetoftheirsaintsandcustodians.Wewon’tevenagreetolookback,toreflect
uponourwaysanduponthedirectionofourthinking,tocheckiftheyarenotmisleading,toseeif
theyarenotallwrong.
Iwishtosaythatthebaseisdefective,thatthevaluesarefalse.Theproofistoday’sman.What
otherproofcantherebe?

Ifweplantaseedandthefruitispoisonousandbitter,whatdoesitprove?Itprovesthattheseed
musthavebeenpoisonousandbitter.Butitisdifficult,ofcourse,toforetellwhetheraparticularseed
willgivebitterfruitornot.Youmaylookitovercarefully,pressitorbreakitopen,butyoucannot
predictforsurewhetherthefruitwillbesweetornot.Youhavetoawaitthetestoftime.
Sowaseed.Aplantwillsprout.Yearswillpass.Atreewillemerge,willspreaditsbranchestothe
sky,willbearfruit–andonlythenwillyoucometoknowwhethertheseedthatwassownwasbitter
ornot.Modernmanisthefruitofthoseseedsofcultureandreligionthatweresowntenthousand
yearsagoandhavebeennurturedeversince.Andthefruitisbitter;itisfullofconflictandmisery.
Butwearetheverypeoplewhoeulogizethoseseedsandexpectlovetoflowerfromthem.Itisnot
tobe,Irepeat,becauseanypossibilityforthebirthoflovehasbeenkilledbyreligion.Thepossibility
hasbeenpoisoned.Moresothaninman,lovecanbeseeninthebirds,animalsandplants,inthose
whohavenoreligionorculture.Loveismoreevidentinuncivilizedmen,inbackwardwoodsmen,
thanintheso-calledprogressive,culturedandcivilizedmenoftoday.And,remember,theaboriginal
peoplehavenodevelopedcivilization,cultureorreligion.
Whyismanprogressivelybecomingsomuchmorebarrenofloveasheprofessestobemoreand
morecivilized,culturedandreligious,goingregularlytotemplesandtochurchestopray?Thereare
somereasonsandIwishtodiscussthem.Ifthesecanbeunderstood,theeternalstreamoflove
canspringforth.Butitisembeddedinstones;itcannotsurface.Itiswalledinonallsides,andthe
Gangescannotgushforth,cannotflowfreely.
Loveiswithinman.Itisnotimportedfromtheoutside.Itisnotacommoditytobepurchasedwhen
wegotothemarkets.Itisthereasthefragranceoflife.Itisinsideeveryone.Thesearchforlove,
thewooingoflove,isnotapositiveaction;itisnotanovertactwherebyyouhavetogosomewhere
anddrawitout.
Asculptorwasworkingonarock.Someonewhohadcometoseehowastatueismadesawno
signofastatue,heonlysawastonebeingcuthereandtherebyachiselandhammer.
”Whatareyoudoing?”themaninquired.”Areyounotgoingtomakeastatue?Ihavecometosee
astatuebeingmade,butIonlyseeyouchippingstone.”
Theartistsaid,”Thestatueisalreadyhiddeninside.Thereisnoneedtomakeit.Somehow,the
uselessmassofstonethatisfusedtoithastobeseparatedfromit,andthenthestatuewillshow
itself.Astatueisnotmade,itisdiscovered.Itisuncovered;itisbroughttolight.”
Loveisshutupinsideman;itneedonlybereleased.Thequestionisnothowtoproduceit,buthow
touncoverit.Whathavewecoveredourselveswith?Whatisitthatwillnotallowlovetosurface?
Tryaskingamedicalpractitionerwhathealthis.Itisverystrange,butnodoctorintheworldcan
tellyouwhathealthis!Withthewholeofmedicalscienceconcernedwithhealth,isn’tthereanyone
whoisabletosaywhathealthis?Ifyouaskadoctor,hewillsayhecanonlytellyouwhatthe
diseasesareorwhatthesymptomsare.Hemayknowthedifferenttechnicaltermforeachand
everydiseaseandhemayalsobeabletoprescribethecure.Buthealth?Abouthealth,hedoes
notknowanything.Hecanonlystatethatwhatremainswhenthereisnodiseaseishealth.Thisis
becausehealthishiddeninsideman.Healthisbeyondthedefinitionofman.
