Itwas fascinating to sit in on a lectureabout this mine while at the TorontoNMRA Convention of 2004. It wasjust what I was looking for to repro-duce as a portable modular layoutto exhibit at shows and, of course,it would fit around the walls of mygarage! The whole thing caught my eyebecause of the rugged terrain, theplethora of trees I would have tomake, and because the buildings, cabins and mine area were all madeof wood and shingles. It also gaveme the opportunity to try a newscenery technique not seen beforein Western Australia. Just the thingfor me.I decided to move up in scaleto On30 and to try DCC, too. NCEDCC was the operating system ofchoice, used in Bachmann locomo-tives (a T-Boiler Shay, and the newClimax). I’ll need to acquire somemore small locos, but they willcome with time.My aim was to keepit small and modular.I made the main mod-ules 12” wide, 4’ long, and 2’-8” high, with afluorescent light fittedbehind the valanceof each module. Thelayout has seven mod-ules arranged in an“L” shape. Spectator viewing was alsoconsidered, with a height of 54”eventu-ally chosen to allow people to look into, rather than down on, the layout. The pinetrestle legs supporting the modules werefour feet high, with the layout’s frame-work sitting on top of them. The basicframes were constructed using 1x6 pinewith mitered corners and timber gussetsinside where the trestle legs sit. Risers(1x2) and 1/4” plywood roadbed wereinstalled and cut at each module end. Inall, construction took nine months.Narrow-gauge On30 track and rail(all code 100) were purchased. Trackwas handlaid in the yards and over thebridges, which took over three full daysto complete. Turnouts were Peco HO,due to their competitive price.Clay was used for general groundcover, as were sticks and twigs collectedfrom the natural environment. Flowerstamens from the marri tree (eucalyptuscalophylla), various lichens and mosses, and branches from the sheoak tree mimictree trunks superbly. Various flowers fromproteas, bansksias, caspias, dryandra, wattles, and paperbark twigs were alsoused. In fact, most of the scenery materi-als were natural products mingled with(of course) the old faithful ground foam.Using an industrial sealant, Selleys “NoMore Gaps”, the whole assembly wasfixed to a polystyrene base which wasfixed between the wooden frames. Auto-motive spray paint from cans and sprayglue were also used extensively with afinal coating of diluted PVA glue.u(more photos on page 6)July/Aug ’08 - O Scale Trains • 5 [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
