GOOD COP, BAD COP
1
Grammar: indirect questions
Good cop
You are a detective investigating the theft of five priceless works of art from the Metropolitan National Gallery
of Art. There was no sign of the thief/thieves breaking into the building and you suspect the Director of the
gallery may be involved. The Director is a highly respected and famous art expert and has been Director
for over twenty years. There are rumours about her/him illegally selling valuable paintings to rich private
collectors, but they may not be true and he/she may be completely innocent. You are going to interview
her/him and you need to:
•
find out what he/she was doing on the night the paintings were stolen
•
search their house(s)
•
access their bank accounts
•
close the gallery for at least four days
•
check their personal emails
•
look at CCTV footage from the gallery
•
ask about the rumours.
Remember:
The Director is a very important person and you are worried about wrongly accusing someone so respected
and well-known. Therefore be as polite and as diplomatic as possible and only ask them indirect questions.
Your partner is not going to be so polite and you need to make any direct questions your partner asks into
indirect ones.

Remember:
The Director is a very important person but you don’t care. You think he/she is highly suspicious and believe
he/she is using their good reputation to hide criminal activity. You don’t care about seeming rude and you are
going to only ask the Director direct questions.
Gallery director
You are the Director of the Metropolitan National Gallery of Art. You have been Director for over twenty
years and you are a famous and respected art expert. You are friends with many rich and powerful people.
However, you are deeply dishonest and greedy. You arranged for five priceless paintings from your gallery to
be stolen and sold to wealthy private collectors. They paid you $200m for the paintings. This money was paid
into your Swiss bank account. You supplied the thieves with the keys and alarm codes. The paintings have
already left the country. The police are going to interview you. You are a very private person and dislike the
police, but of course you need to be helpful and convince them that you are not involved in the thefts.
