A plan of the early Dreadnaughtend was published in theMainline ModelerSeptember, 1992,issue. Rich Yoder produced brass models of this car in 2002.The O Scale car in this article is modeled from the earlier37000–37299 series that had the full lower sides between theside ribs. For those of us who like to scratchbuild, here’s how tobuild one.ConstructionThe ends of the car were fabricated from stamped brass box-car ends, so that the end corrugations would be visible on theinside of the car. The floor and sides were built using Styrenesheet and shapes. Rivet details were embossed on thin Sty-rene and on paper labels. The labels provide sharp rivet detail, adhere strongly to Styrene and, being 0.003” thick, are aboutequal to 14-gauge steel in O Scale. The steel centerbeam andbrass trucks provide additional weight to bring the finished carweight to 12 ounces. A number of commercial detail parts wereused to complete the car. The techniques of this article can beused to build models of several other prototypes. See the Mate-rials and parts lists for the necessary items. It’s recommendedthat these be obtained before the project is started. I've alsoincluded a list of the tools I used to build the car. Diagramsof the construction fixtures used are at the end of this article. These fixtures are not specific to this car, so they can be usedfor other rolling stock projects. Finally, I‘ve outlined the rivetingmethods used to build this car.UnderframeCut the sub floor from 0.060” Styrene sheet using the dimen-sions in Figure 2. Square up the cut edges with a sanding block.Use a center-finding rule to locate the two centerlines and thelocations of the holes. With a fine-line pencil, mark the center-lines of the seven floor joists and the two bolsters. Drill the twotruck mounting holes. If you are using Kadee coupler boxes, drill the mountingholes and tap the 2-56 threads. Using the dimensions in Figure3, cut and drill two upper draft gear blocks from 0.040” Sty-rene sheet. File the bevels with a square needle file. Cut anddrill two lower draft gear blocks from 0.060” Styrene. Cut offthe rear mounting hole boss on each Kadee coupler box. Fileaway any rough edges. Assemble the couplers and draft gearper Kadee, instructions. If desired, the trip pin can be cut offwith a heavy-duty wire cutter.Cut the center beam from 1/4” square steel key stock asshown in Figure 2. File the ends so they are smooth and square.Drill and tap the truck mounting holes for 4-40 threads. Then, assemble the sub floor and the center beam to the underframefixture using two 4-40 x 1” screws with their screw heads in thecounterbores of the fixture. Before tightening the screws, flow asmall amount of thin CA glue between the beam and floor. Donot allow the CA to glue the screws in place. Check the fit of thedraft gear using one of each block and a Kadee box with two 2-56 screws at each end of the floor (Figure 4).Cut two lengths of 1/4” Styrene channel to 8-7/8” long. Onone channel, drill a 0.032” diameter hole adjacent to the lowerflange, 4-3/4” from the right end. This end of the channel isinstalled toward the “B” end of the floor. Coat one side of thecenter beam with CA and flow a small bead of liquid plasticadhesive along the intersection of the beam and floor. Place thechannel against the beam and floor, clamped for several min-utes. On the other channel, drill a 0.032” diameter hole adja-cent to the lower flange, 3-3/4” from the right end. This end ofthe channel is installed toward the “A” end of the floor. Repeatthe gluing process for this channel. This completes the car’scenter sill.Cut four bolster bases from 0.060” x 0.250” Styrene strip to63/64” long. Glue one of these on each side of the center sillon the truck centerlines (Refer to the left end of Figure 5.) Cutfour 1/4” lengths from the 0.060” x 0.250” strip. Glue one onthe outer end of each bolster base. Then, cut eight bolster sidesfrom 0.060” x 0.250” Styrene strip to the dimensions of Figure6. Tape four of these together with masking tape on the sides’• O Scale Trains - Nov/Dec ’05These figures are not to scale.10.000CENTERFLOO JOISTR(3) 0.020" x 0.020" X0.563 STYRENEGLUE(7) ¯0.032"1.1240.8125.0000.060 STYRENE0.219ÿ0.070TA 2:56PB - END1.4690.7500.4533 PLACESÿ0.125 (2 PLCS)2.3750.219BRAKE RIGGING MOUNTING LOCATIONS3.8284.8753.8284.8750.7190.1560.040STYRENE0.060STYRENE0.500ÿ0.0930.2190.2190.6880.438BLOCK - LOWERDRAFT GEAR BOX9 PENCI LL INES0.5630.9690.9691.9382.9063.8281.9382.906BLOCK- PPU ERDRAFT GEAR BOXÿ0.1250.4383.8280.060" STYRENE0.438SUB FLOORTRUCK BLOCK8.875DRILL ÿ0.089 TA 4:40Pÿ0.1250.7501/4 SQ.
