In this search for the maximum authenticity among a maze of romantic
accretions I would like to acknowledge the help received in the preparation of
this book by the staff of the ninja museums of Iga-Ueno, Koga and Togakure.
The illustrations have been greatly enhanced by the members of the ninja re-
enactment group of Iga-Ueno, who kindly and patiently posed for photographs.
I would particularly like to thank my wife for her usual endeavours in picture
research and administration.
